Sir,
I have the honour to inform you that
a representation has been made to me by the Registrar General regarding the salary of the Senior Chinese Writer in his Department, who at present draws $40 a year.
: 8. Mr Stewart Lockhart has pointed
out that the duties which the Senior Chinese Miter has to discharge are of a very responsible nature. He is in charg e of all the Chinese correspondence of the Registrar General s Department, and has to assist in the ever increasing trans → lation work of that office. It would be very difficult to find another officer so well qualified to take his place and it would be impossible to obtain the services of one at the salary; now drawn by the: Senior Chinese Writer.
. 3. der-these circumstances' I
recommend that the salary of the post be raised to $800, a year rising by annual increment to $720. a year in three years.
4.' The Registrar General returned to this Colorg too late this year to enable him to bring the matter forward when the Estimates for 1901 were under
consideration.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

: I have the honour to be,

Your most obedient
humble servBIL vý Wall
Henry
